Physical Education (PE)

Our vision

At Henleaze Infant and Junior Schools, we aim to inspire children to have a lifelong love of an active lifestyle. The PE curriculum will also help to develop key life skills and qualities such as teamwork, self reflection, resilience, independence, fairness, and tolerance.

We have developed a vibrant PE curriculum, delivered by both specialist sports coaches and class teachers, where children engage in enjoyable and high-quality physical activities within a safe, supportive environment. PE is a strength in both schools with the aim that all children represent the school in competitive sporting activities during their time with us. All children have swimming lessons in Year 3 and experience outdoor and adventurous activities offsite in Years 5 and 6.

Our Curriculum

At Henleaze Infant and Junior Schools, we follow the Get Set 4 PE curriculum, supplemented by some bespoke units such as circuit training. Subject leaders have made sure that the combined elements are cumulative, coherent and connected. Across the Henleaze PE sequence, what pupils will know and be able to do across the curriculum has been carefully mapped. This ensures that learning builds cumulatively and helps students to make connections between concepts that they have learnt. Prior-learning has been identified and mapped to the curriculum so that teachers can build new knowledge. Fundamental movement skills underpin all activities in PE. These units allow children to develop these skills in isolation and in combination.

All children have 2 PE sessions per week, one delivered by the class teacher, the other by Shine Coaches. All sessions use the Get Set 4 PE curriculum apart from swimming in Year 3 (Horfield Leisure Centre Swim Teachers), dance and mindful movement in KS2 (school designed programme). Specialist teachers are also employed to deliver most of the outdoor and adventurous activities in Years 5 and 6.

The Get Set 4 PE curriculum has the teaching of skills embedded within it, ensuring high-quality input with well sequenced and consistent progression. Lesson sequences are planned to repeat and build upon concepts and skills to enable children to develop competence and recognise their own progression.  Children learn to work co-operatively through planned activities and games built into their lessons. Opportunities for competition are introduced when children have developed the skills to find competition rewarding, guided by the skill and progression guidance in Get Set 4 PE. All children will leave our schools feeling confident that they can participate in PE and that they have made progress both physically and in their learning skills.

As well as supporting the delivery of our curriculum, Shine coaches facilitate activities for skills development and engagement in physical activities at lunchtimes and through offering after schools clubs.

Impact

Each year group has clear cumulative end goals – these are identified for teachers. Formative assessment is embedded, including: questioning, observation, discussion and peer interaction, lesson pauses and use of success criteria enabling pupils to consolidate learning and teachers to gauge understanding.
